Human Library - "Book" Application
Complete the application below to indicate your interest in serving as a "book" in our Human Library event, which will be held on Friday April 14th from 5pm-9pm.
About the Human Library
A Human Library is an event in which people serve as “books” and are “borrowed” for approximately 15 minutes at a time by individuals interested in learning more about their background, experiences, and perspective in a private one-on-one conversation. Events like this have been successfully held at libraries and other educational institutions around the world.
The goal of the Human Library is to allow people to address potential prejudices and misconceptions through safe, respectful, and meaningful dialogue. To that end, library staff and volunteers will take a number of precautions to ensure that “books” are only paired with individuals seeking genuine conversation. Furthermore, participants are able to stop the discussion at any time should they desire.
Being a "Book"
“Books” will each be given a title based on their occupation, ethnicity, or societal label in order to elicit individuals’ personal biases or preconceptions. “Books” should prepare a short introduction to begin the discussion with their “borrowers” and then be prepared to answer any questions posed by the “borrower.”
As a “book” you will need to be comfortable discussing your experiences, including any hardships, stresses, or prejudices you may have endured. You should be aware that there is a potential that conversations could get uncomfortable or emotional for either you or the person who “borrows” you, but that those are signs that the conversation is meaningful and impactful.
If you are interested in serving as a “book,” please complete the application below. Once your application is received, a staff member will contact you to discuss your application and answer any questions you may have.
