My Name: Kathy Meagher

What is my job at the library? Like all the other librarians, I have many jobs. Mine include regular shifts on the public service desks and teaching computer classes, but my primary focus is Billerica, past and present. I maintain the Community Information Database, which provides patrons with referrals to services, organizations, and resources in the area. I also maintain the Local History Room. I have received inquiries from as far away as Australia asking for genealogy or history help, or for information about various organizations or resources.

How long have I worked at the library? I have worked here since 1996.

What is my favorite part of the job? The people. I love interacting with the patrons. I really enjoy assisting with their research, knowing that I am helping someone find answers.

What do I like to read? I am an avid reader but I read mostly fiction. I love to escape into history or into a good romance or mystery. I enjoy just about any genre.

What is my favorite book? My all-time favorite books are The Lorax, by Dr. Seuss and The Wretched Stone by Chris Van Allsburg. I know that they are children’s books but their lessons are ageless.

Other than reading what do I like to do when I'm not working? I love being with my husband and three children. They are the very best part of my life.

What is the most interesting fact about me? I am not that interesting, but I guess my career has taken some unusual turns. While I was in high school and college I worked with children with special needs. When I graduated college, I taught kindergarten for a year. After that, I went to the police academy, graduated, and served as a police officer for a number of years. When my children were young, I was a stay-at-home Mom. When they grew older, I went back to the work force as a librarian. Not exactly a straight career path but I wouldn’t change any of my choices. I have learned from each of them and loved them all.
