Organizations

Local Organizations

  • The Billerica Historical Society – The historical society works to preserve Billerica’s cultural heritage and to educate the town’s citizens on that heritage. The society maintains several historic buildings in town including the Clara Sexton house which also serves as the organization’s headquarters. It also holds a substantial collection of genealogies and other items related to town history.  
  • Middlesex Canal Association – The Middlesex Canal Association is dedicated to preserving the history of the Middlesex Canal and educating the public about it. The organization runs the Middlesex Canal Museum.  
  • Friends of Bedford Depot Park – The Friends of Bedford Depot Park seeks to preserve the railroad history of Bedford, MA, and surrounding towns, including a focus on the Billerica & Bedford Railroad.

State Organizations

  • Boston Public Library – The Boston Public Library has extensive digital and physical collections on Massachusetts history along with helpful research guides.  
  • Digital Commonwealth – A central repository for digitized items created by cultural heritage institutions across Massachusetts. This site is run through the Boston Public Library and supported by the Library for the Commonwealth program.   
  • Massachusetts State Archives – The State Archive holds governmental documents and other important historical records from Massachusetts history including judicial records and vital records.  
  • Massachusetts Historical Society – As the nation’s first historical society, the MHS strives to enhance the understanding of our nation’s past and its connection to the present, demonstrating that history is not just a series of events that happened to individuals long ago but is integral to the fabric of our daily lives. 
  • Massachusetts Land Records – The Secretary of the Commonwealth would like to welcome you to Massachusetts Land Records. This site provides you with quick access to land records across the State. 
  • Early Vital Records of Massachusetts From 1600 to 1850 – A directory maintained by Historic Ipswich that links to early vital records for many Massachusetts town

National and International Organizations

  • Find A Grave – Find the graves of ancestors, create virtual memorials, add ‘virtual flowers’ and a note to a loved one’s grave or find the graves of thousands of famous people from around the world. 
  • HathiTrust – A digital library dedicated to providing durable, long-term and legal access to millions of items. It provides access to many old and difficult to locate texts.  
  • Internet Archive – The Internet Archive, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, is building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form. Like a paper library, we provide free access to researchers, historians, scholars, and the general public. 
  • The Library of Congress – The research library for the United States Congress and the de facto national library of the United States. The Library has extensive historical collections.  
  • National Archives – passenger arrivals, censuses, naturalization’s, military and pension, Native American and tribal information.  National Archives at Boston serves New England.
The Library will be closed on Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day. We will reopen for regular hours on Tuesday, May 26.
