The January No Club Book Club selection is Fire Weather by John Vaillant
Fire Weather by John Valliant tells the true story of a massive 2016 wildfire that swept across the town of Fort McMurray in Alberta, Canada.
Due to a combination of factors, including high winds and record-breaking temperatures, the Fort McMurray fire grew rapidly. Before the fire could be brought under control, entire neighborhoods were destroyed, and more than 85,000 people were forced to evacuate. Approximately 2,400 homes and businesses were lost. The Fort McMurray wildfire would become the most most expensive natural disaster in Canadian history.
Vaillant takes the reader on an in-depth journey into the 2016 wildfire through research and accounts from firefighters, evacuees, and government officials. He explores how climate change and human activity have impacted the Boreal Forest and the Athabasca oil sands in Northern Alberta. Vaillant warns that we should prepare for a future where catastrophic wildfires are of increasing possibility and look for ways to mitigate the danger.
